About NÜWIEL

NÜWIEL is a mobility solutions developer focused on sustainable last-mile cargo transportation in urban environments. The company was founded in Hamburg, Germany, in 2016 by Natalia Tomiyama, Fahad Khan, and Sandro Rabbiosi. The founders, who met at an EU-funded entrepreneurship workshop, shared a vision to reduce the reliance on cars in cities, thereby decreasing noise and air pollution. Fahad Khan has a background in aerospace engineering, providing technical expertise in product design, while Natalia Tomiyama holds an MBA and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, guiding the company's business strategy. Sandro Rabbiosi's motivation stemmed from a desire for a healthier, greener environment for his children.

The company's core product is the eTrailer, an intelligent electric-powered bicycle trailer. Its patented "zero-force" sensor technology enables the trailer to automatically accelerate and brake in sync with the bicycle it is attached to, with millisecond precision. This allows a cyclist to transport up to 200kg without feeling the additional weight. The eTrailer features an integrated suspension for a smooth ride on uneven surfaces, a redundant braking system for safety, and can be attached to any standard or electric bike. When disconnected, it functions as an electric handcart, suitable for use in pedestrian zones and indoors.

NÜWIEL targets the business-to-business market, serving clients in the courier, retail, and public sectors. It has established partnerships with major companies such as IKEA, UPS, and Dott, and became an official fleet supplier for the Belgian Post in 2021. The business model involves the sale and rental of its eTrailers. The company has secured significant funding, including a €2 million grant from the EIC in 2020 and €2 million from EIT InnoEnergy in 2022, to scale its production and expand into new European markets.
