Monumental

Monumental is a robotics company aiming to address labor shortages, rising costs, and sustainability issues within the construction industry. Founded in Amsterdam in 2021 by CEO Salar al Khafaji and CTO Sebastiaan Visser, the company develops AI-powered autonomous robots that perform on-site construction tasks, with an initial focus on bricklaying. The founders are serial entrepreneurs, having previously co-founded the data visualization firm Silk, which was acquired by Palantir in 2016.

The company's core product consists of small, electric, and agile autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs). These robots are designed to navigate the rough terrain of construction sites and work alongside human counterparts. Equipped with advanced sensors, computer vision, and small cranes, the robots can place bricks and mortar with a precision and efficiency comparable to human bricklayers. The entire system is operated by Monumental's proprietary AI-powered software, Atrium. The robots are compact enough to access tight spaces, move through doorways, and be transported in a van.

Monumental operates on a bricklaying-as-a-service business model, where contractors hire the company as a subcontractor. This approach allows construction companies to utilize the technology without the financial risk of purchasing and maintaining the machinery or the technical burden of learning to operate it. The company has already deployed its robots on several projects in the Netherlands, including social housing and the completion of a 15-meter facade for an office and warehouse building in 2023. In February 2024, Monumental announced it had raised $25 million in a funding round co-led by Plural and Hummingbird, with participation from investors like Northzone and Foundamental. This capital is intended to scale its team, increase the number of robots deployed across Europe, and expand the range of tasks the robots can perform.
