About Mighty
Mighty, founded by Suhail Doshi in 2019, operated on the premise of creating a faster, more efficient web browser by moving its processing to the cloud. Doshi, a self-taught programmer who previously co-founded the analytics platform Mixpanel in 2009 after dropping out of Arizona State University to join Y Combinator, sought to solve the common issue of browser-induced computer slowdown. After stepping down as CEO of Mixpanel in 2018, Doshi started Mighty with the vision that the browser is effectively the modern operating system.
The company's core product was a Chromium-based browser that streamed from a powerful cloud server to the user's computer. This architecture was designed to allow users to open hundreds of tabs and run resource-heavy web applications like Figma and Airtable without consuming significant local memory or CPU, thereby preventing slowdowns and excessive fan noise. Mighty claimed to use 10x less memory than Google Chrome on the local machine. The service was targeted at power users on macOS and operated on a subscription model, costing around $30 per month. Each user was allocated significant cloud resources, including dedicated memory and processing power, and promised internet speeds of over 1Gbps.
The browser included productivity features such as a command palette for quick actions, universal search across Google Drive and Notion, and shortcuts for managing tabs. Security was also a consideration, with features like encryption and browser isolation to protect user data. However, the business model faced significant headwinds. The rapid improvement in local computer hardware, particularly the launch of Apple's highly efficient M1 chip, diminished the browser's core value proposition for many potential customers. In November 2022, Doshi announced that the team would cease development on the Mighty browser and pivot to focus on building creative tools using AI under a new venture, Playground AI.
