Biological chemistry company MoreLess
METabolic EXplorer SA (METEX), founded in 1999 by Benjamin Gonzalez, is a French industrial biochemistry company that focused on developing fermentation-based alternatives to petrochemical processes. The company was established based on Gonzalez's doctoral research, with the vision of utilizing fermentation to produce everyday products more sustainably. Initially incubated at a university, METEX later moved to the Biopôle Clermont-Limagne technology park. The company went public with an IPO on the Paris stock exchange in 2007.
The firm's business model centers on the research, development, and industrialization of bioprocesses to manufacture functional ingredients from renewable raw materials. These ingredients serve various markets, including cosmetics, animal nutrition, and biopolymers. Key products developed include 1,3-propanediol (PDO), primarily for the cosmetics market, and butyric acid (BA) for animal nutrition. Another significant innovation was a bio-based L-Methionine for animal feed, a technology later sold to Evonik in 2016 for €45 million. The company operated through industrial subsidiaries, including METEX NØØVISTA in Carling and METEX NØØVISTAGO in Amiens, to produce and market its ingredients. A key partnership was established with Royal DSM for the commercialization of its cosmetic-grade PDO.
Significant milestones included the acquisition of Ajinomoto Animal Nutrition Europe's facilities in Amiens in 2020, which became METEX NØØVISTAGO. In 2018, METEX formed a joint venture with Bpifrance's SPI fund to create METEX NØØVISTA, investing €48 million to construct a PDO and BA production plant. However, the company faced significant financial distress, attributed to factors including intense competition from China in the lysine market. This led to the company seeking receivership in March 2024. In July 2024, the Paris Commercial Court ordered the conversion of the receivership into judicial liquidation. Subsequently, the group's assets were sold, with Avril Services acquiring the activities of METEX NØØVISTAGO and a portion of METabolic EXplorer's commercial and R&D operations. Trading of METEX shares on Euronext was suspended and ultimately delisted, with the shares valued at zero as proceeds from the asset sale were insufficient to repay shareholders.
