About Meebo

Meebo, Inc. operated as a consumer internet company that initially drew attention for its web-based, multi-protocol instant messaging service. Founded in September 2005 by Seth Sternberg, Sandy Jen, and Elaine Wherry, the company emerged from the founders' desire to create a more accessible, web-native communication tool, moving instant messaging from downloadable software to the browser. This core product, Meebo Messenger, allowed users to connect to various major chat services—including AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, and later Google Talk and Facebook Chat—through a single, consolidated interface, a significant convenience at the time.

The company's business model evolved from its initial focus on a destination website. Observing user behavior and direct feedback, the founders realized the potential for embedding social functionalities across the web. This insight led to the development of several key products. "Meebo Me" was a widget that website owners could embed to chat directly with their visitors. Subsequently, the company launched the "Meebo Bar," a JavaScript-based toolbar that website publishers could integrate at the bottom of their pages. This bar provided chat, content sharing, and social media integration, aiming to increase user engagement on third-party sites. It became the cornerstone of Meebo's revenue strategy, which was centered on advertising. Brands could purchase rich media ad units within the Meebo Bar, which reported higher engagement rates and user interaction times compared to standard display ads.

Financially, Meebo attracted significant venture capital, securing funding from prominent investors including Sequoia Capital, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and Time Warner. The company expanded its reach through mobile applications for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry and through the strategic acquisition of Mindset Media in 2011 to enhance its ad-targeting capabilities. In June 2012, Google acquired Meebo for a reported sum of around $100 million. The acquisition was primarily a talent and technology acquisition, with Google integrating the Meebo team into its Google+ division to leverage their expertise in social publisher tools. Following the acquisition, most of Meebo's products, including the Messenger and Meebo Bar, were discontinued by July 2012 and June 2013, respectively, marking the end of the company's standalone operations.
