About Maxta

Maxta, founded in 2009 by Yoram Novick, initially emerged as a player in the hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) market. Novick, a seasoned entrepreneur with a background in enterprise systems and cloud computing, previously founded Topio, which was acquired by NetApp, and held advisory roles at companies like Storwize and Druva. His experience in storage and systems architecture directly influenced Maxta's direction. The company was established to simplify IT infrastructure by converging compute, storage, and storage networking into a single server tier.

The company's core offering was its software-defined storage platform, MxSP, which allowed customers to build HCI clusters using standard x86 servers from various vendors like Cisco, Dell EMC, and HPE. This software-only approach was designed to provide flexibility and eliminate the need for expensive, complex external storage arrays. Maxta's platform provided enterprise-class data services, including advanced snapshot and clone technology, capacity optimization, and high availability to support virtualized environments and a variety of workloads. The business model focused on selling this hyperconvergence software, which could be deployed on new or existing server hardware, targeting clients from enterprise to educational institutions.

Maxta secured significant funding, including a $10 million Series A round in 2013 led by Andreessen Horowitz and a $25 million Series B round in 2014 with participation from Intel Capital and Tenaya Capital. Despite its technology and early recognition, including being named a Gartner Cool Vendor in 2015, the company faced intense competition in the HCI market from larger, more heavily funded players like Nutanix and VMware. After failing to secure a new funding round, Maxta ceased operations in early 2019. In March 2019, its assets, including technology and patents, were acquired by the Chinese firm Huayun Data International. Following the acquisition, Maxta appears to have pivoted, with its current website indicating a transformation into an artificial intelligence technology provider, aiming to build next-generation enterprise intelligence platforms.
