MARS Auto
Developing autonomous trucks to completely automate warehouse to warehouse truck operations
About MARS Auto
MARS Auto, a South Korean artificial intelligence startup founded in 2017 by Ilsu Park and Gyuri Im, is focused on developing autonomous driving technology for the commercial trucking industry. Park, the CEO, and Im, both alumni of the Department of Computer Science at KAIST, established the company to create self-driving solutions specifically for heavy-duty trucks. The firm's core business revolves around providing AI-based software for self-driving trucks, targeting the middle-mile logistics sector. This involves automating long-haul freight shipping between warehouses, operating on a hub-to-hub model.
The company's technology is distinguished by its camera-centric, data-driven approach, which avoids reliance on expensive LiDAR and high-definition maps. This system, which can be retrofitted onto existing trucks, utilizes a computer, cameras, and actuators to learn driving policies from real-world data. MARS Auto's machine learning algorithms can estimate factors like payload weight and external conditions on the fly, enabling the trucks to operate robustly in varied environments. This approach is designed to be more cost-effective, with an aim to offer automation for as low as US$7,000 per truck, and improve fuel efficiency, thereby reducing operational costs for carriers.
Since its inception, MARS Auto has achieved several key milestones. The company completed a seed funding round in December 2017, securing investments from Kakao Mobility and Kakao Ventures. It later participated in Y Combinator's Winter 2019 batch and raised a Series A round of approximately $13 million in March 2022, led by GFT Ventures. The first autonomous pilot program began in Korea in 2020, leading to the first commercial operation of its autonomous trucks in 2023, making it the sole commercial long-haul autonomous freight shipper in the country. Having accumulated over 1,000,000 km of autonomous mileage in Korea, MARS Auto expanded into the U.S. market in 2024, establishing operations in Texas to test its technology on freight corridors connecting Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
