Mantis Space
Orbital power grid beaming sunlight to satellites in eclipse
About Mantis Space
Mantis Space is an Albuquerque space and advanced-energy company founded by CEO Eric Truitt (former Terran Orbital / PredaSAR co-founder; BlueHalo exit), Chairman and CSO retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Hugh Wyman Howard III, and COO Jeremy Scheerer (ex-U.S. Air Force program manager) that is building an orbital power grid to remove Earth's shadow as a constraint on satellite operations. Its planned constellation of spacecraft stays nearly continuously in sunlight and beams power optically to client satellites, stations and future orbital platforms through their existing solar arrays—no special retrofit—so assets can keep generating when they pass through eclipse rather than draining batteries for roughly one-third of each orbit. The company argues that continuous power lets operators stay in productive orbits instead of chasing sunlight (including sun-synchronous paths that can leave satellites outside revenue-generating areas for much of the day), improving utilization, lifetime and economics for communications, defence, climate monitoring and emerging orbital compute. Leadership and engineering draw from Sandia National Laboratories, Apple Face ID / James Webb optics and Google MicroLED programmes, with advisory support including Admiral James A. Winnefeld Jr. Emerging from stealth in March 2026, Mantis Space raised an oversubscribed seed of more than $10 million led by Rule 1 Ventures with Montauk Capital (which incubated the company) to hire and scale go-to-market from New Mexico.
