maniaTV
Network of pop culture-related tv shows
About maniaTV
maniaTV pioneered the concept of an internet television network, launching in 2004 as a 24/7 live-streaming platform. Founded by Drew Massey, who previously established the young male magazine P.O.V., the company aimed to capture the Internet-savvy youth market (ages 13-34) with original content. Initially based in Denver, Colorado, the operation relocated to a production house in Los Angeles in early 2008 to be closer to entertainment industry talent.
The network's business model focused on producing and distributing its own live, celebrity-hosted shows and other original programming centered on pop culture, including music, comedy, gaming, and action sports. Revenue was primarily generated through branded entertainment and advertising, with the company working with numerous major advertising agencies and brands. maniaTV's content lineup featured shows such as "Tom Green Live!," "Dave Navarro's Spread TV," and programs with celebrities like Chuck Norris and the Gastineau Girls. At its peak, the platform reported reaching over 10 million viewers monthly.
Despite raising over $26 million from investors including Benchmark, Intel, and Comerica, maniaTV faced significant financial challenges. In early 2009, the company conducted layoffs and, after being unable to renegotiate a credit facility with Comerica, shut down its operations in March 2009. Founder Drew Massey, who had stepped back to a chairman role, subsequently bought back the company's brand and some content for a fraction of its raised capital. He announced a relaunch plan in mid-2009 with a renewed focus on celebrity TV shows and a leaner operational model, bringing media veterans like Warren Littlefield onto the new board.
