About Mambo.com
Mambo, operating under the domain mambo.com, is an Australian fashion and lifestyle brand with a rich history rooted in surf culture, art, and music. The company was established in 1984 in Sydney by Dare Jennings and Andrew Rich. Jennings, who had previously founded Phantom Surfboards and the independent record label Phantom Records, envisioned a brand that would diverge from the mainstream surf labels of the era by incorporating humor, satire, and a rebellious spirit reflective of Australian counter-culture.
The business model centers on the sale of apparel and accessories, such as T-shirts, hoodies, and swimwear, primarily through its official online store. Mambo's key differentiator lies in its graphic-led designs, which are the result of collaborations with a host of artists. The most prominent of these is Reg Mombassa, whose quirky and satirical illustrations of suburban life and other themes became a trademark for the brand. Richard Allan is another key artist, known for creating the infamous 'farting dog' graphic that became a recurring logo. In total, over 250 artists have contributed to Mambo's distinctive aesthetic over the decades.
A significant milestone in the company's history was being selected to design the Australian team's uniforms for the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, which propelled the brand to international recognition. Over the years, Mambo has undergone several changes in ownership. It was acquired by Gazal Corporation after the 2000 Olympics, later sold to The Nervous Investor Group in 2008, and then to the US-based Saban Brands in 2015. In July 2019, the brand returned to Australian ownership when it was acquired by Caprice Australia. As of 2024, the brand operates with a new team and website, focusing on a print-on-demand model to minimize waste and ensure ethical production through suppliers that adhere to standards like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards).
