The company was founded in 2012 by Luciano Tavares, who brought nearly two decades of investment management experience to the venture. His journey began in 1994 at Merrill Lynch and included founding the investment management firm Nest Investimento, experiences that laid the groundwork for Magnetis. Tavares, a graduate of Fundação Getúlio Vargas in Business Administration with a subsequent degree in Financial Engineering from the University of São Paulo, envisioned leveraging technology to automate portfolio allocation and make wealth management scalable.

Magnetis targets individuals who are not, nor wish to become, investment specialists, providing them with a simplified and transparent way to manage their financial future. The business model is centered around providing goal-based investment plans, aiming to act as an impartial guide for clients, distinct from traditional, commission-based financial advice. The platform utilizes algorithms and artificial intelligence to analyze market assets, creating diversified and cost-effective portfolios tailored to each investor's profile. Clients can then place and monitor their investments entirely online. This approach is designed to demystify the complexities of the financial market for those with limited financial literacy.

Over its history, Magnetis achieved significant milestones, including raising a total of $16.9 million in funding over three rounds. Notable investors include Redpoint eventures, Monashees, and Vostok Emerging Finance. In a major development, Magnetis was acquired by BTG Pactual on August 22, 2023. This acquisition provides BTG Pactual with access to the technology solutions developed by Magnetis over more than a decade, bolstering its position in the growing digital asset management sector in Latin America.
