Magnetic Future is a spin-off from the University of Bologna and Mercatorum University that develops contactless power supplies, known as flux pumps, for superconducting magnets. The company's team consists of early-career PhDs and senior advisors with extensive experience in superconducting science and technology. The co-founder and CEO, Giacomo Russo, is a PhD in Applied Superconductivity and an expert in flux pump technology. The founding team also includes COO Emiliano Guerra, an electrical engineer and PhD candidate, and CFO Marianna Di Pietrantonio, a mechanical engineer and PhD candidate. They are supported by seasoned academics and researchers, including Professor Simone Minucci, Professor Antonio Morandi, and Dr. Alessandro Lampasi. The core technology, flux pumps, addresses the significant energy consumption and large physical footprint of traditional power supplies for superconducting magnets. By enabling contactless power transfer, this technology drastically reduces energy losses, heat load, and operational costs. For example, in fusion energy applications, flux pumps can cut consumption by up to 99%, and in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), they can reduce electrical costs by a factor of eight. This approach eliminates the need for bulky, expensive high-current power supplies and physical connections that cause heat loss. The company targets a B2B market, serving clients in sectors that rely on large superconducting magnets. Key markets include fusion energy developers, space companies and agencies, MRI manufacturers, and scientific research facilities. Magnetic Future is actively engaged in go-to-market activities, having signed three letters of intent with companies in the fusion and space sectors and completed a feasibility study for an industrial partner. The startup has received recognition through multiple awards, including the Barresi Prize 2025 and the Luciano Miotto Startup Award. It is also part of the ESA BIC Lazio incubation program, which focuses on prototyping the technology for space applications.
