Lynda.com established itself as a foundational platform in the online education market, specializing in professional skills development. The company was founded in 1995 by Lynda Weinman and her husband, Bruce Heavin. Initially, the website was created as an online support resource for Weinman's books and in-person classes, where she taught web design and digital media. Weinman, a self-taught computer instructor and special effects animator with experience on films like "RoboCop 2" and "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," leveraged her passion for teaching to address a growing need for accessible tech education. Heavin, an artist and illustrator, contributed the creative vision, designing the company's distinctive logo and early visual identity.

The business began with a modest $20,000 investment from Weinman's book royalties to rent a computer lab for in-person workshops, which quickly sold out and revealed significant market demand. This success led to the formal incorporation of Lynda.com in 1997. In 2002, the company pivoted to an online model, offering video courses through a subscription service. This model provided members with access to an extensive library of high-quality video tutorials taught by industry experts, covering subjects in business, technology, and creative fields. Revenue was generated through individual, corporate, academic, and government subscriptions. A key aspect of its business model involved a revenue-sharing agreement with its instructors, who earned royalties based on their courses' performance.

The platform grew significantly, expanding its library to thousands of courses and hundreds of thousands of video tutorials. Strategic acquisitions, such as the Austrian online training provider video2brain in 2013 and the online code editor Compilr in 2014, helped expand its multilingual content and technical capabilities. A major milestone occurred in April 2015 when LinkedIn announced its acquisition of Lynda.com for approximately $1.5 billion, a deal that officially closed in May 2015. Following the acquisition, Lynda.com was integrated into LinkedIn and eventually rebranded as LinkedIn Learning in October 2017, aligning its skills development content with the professional networking platform.
