About KVS Technologies

Originally founded as KVS Technologies in Stavanger, Norway, in 2015, Field has evolved from a specialized robotics firm into a comprehensive geospatial technology company. The venture was started by Håkon Kjerkreit, Cato Vevatne, and Steffen Solberg as a student incubator project at the University of Stavanger. Their initial work drew on Norway's extensive experience in underwater robotics to develop systems for high-risk land-based operations, such as a robot designed for firefighting in tunnels.

The company pivoted to specialize in autonomous drone-based inspection of critical infrastructure, particularly power grids, offering a more efficient and safer alternative to traditional helicopter methods. This strategic shift led to the development of a 'data as a service' business model, providing clients with an end-to-end solution. This service encompasses data capture using proprietary unmanned aerial systems, data processing, and analysis delivered through a cloud-based platform, effectively creating a digital twin of the client's assets. Revenue is generated by providing these inspection and digitalization services to large grid and infrastructure companies.

A period of rapid expansion began in 2021 when KVS Technologies acquired Terratec, a major European geodata provider, which increased its workforce from 30 to 300 and led to the combined entity KVS Terratec. This was followed by the acquisition of Sevendof, a long-range drone technology specialist, in April 2022. In late 2022, the entire group rebranded to Field to reflect its broadened capabilities in geodata collection and analysis. To establish a presence in the North American market, the company entered an exclusivity agreement with Spright in 2021 and acquired the US drone firm PrecisionHawk in March 2023.

Following a challenging economic period, Field underwent a corporate restructuring at the end of 2023. The company was split into two separate entities under new ownership. The traditional geospatial and land surveying business was acquired by the existing shareholder DSD AS and a group of senior employees, continuing under the Field brand. Concurrently, the original drone and inspection division was acquired by a group of investors, including the family office of the former board chair, and is set to operate under a new, yet-to-be-announced brand.
