About iStreamPlanet

iStreamPlanet was a video streaming solutions provider founded in 2000 by Mio Babic, a former professional basketball player. The company began by streaming weddings from a chapel in Las Vegas and grew into a significant enterprise-level service for live video delivery over the internet. Babic led the company as President and CEO, driving several industry firsts, such as the initial implementations of digital rights management and the first live, multi-camera webcast.

The firm specialized in processing and delivering live video broadcasts for major media and technology brands. Its business model revolved around providing cloud-based, end-to-end video workflow solutions for live events and linear streaming channels. Key clients included prominent names like NBC Sports, Turner Broadcasting, Fox, Microsoft, and AT&T. iStreamPlanet powered the online streaming for numerous high-profile sporting events, including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the FIFA World Cup, and the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. The company's main offerings were the Aventus Media Processing Suite and the Orbis Direct-to-Consumer Platform, which handled services like video transcoding, content management, and dynamic ad insertion.

In August 2015, Turner Broadcasting System acquired a majority stake in iStreamPlanet, reportedly for around $200 million, to bolster its over-the-top (OTT) programming and transition its infrastructure to the cloud. Despite the acquisition, iStreamPlanet continued to operate as a standalone entity, serving both Turner and third-party clients. The company had raised a total of $17 million in funding over three rounds from investors including Intel Capital, Juniper Networks, and QuestMark Partners before the acquisition. Ultimately, as part of cost-cutting measures, Warner Bros. Discovery, the final parent company, shut down iStreamPlanet on August 14, 2023, laying off the remaining employees.
