IPtronics A/S

IPtronics A/S operated as a fabless semiconductor company, focusing on the design and manufacturing of integrated circuits for parallel optical interconnects. The company was established in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September 2003 by Niels Finseth, Steen Bak Christensen, and Eivind Johansen. All three founders brought extensive experience from their previous roles as managers and engineers at Giga A/S, a firm specializing in optical communication components that was acquired by Intel in 2000. This shared background in high-speed integrated circuit development for telecommunications provided a strong foundation for IPtronics. Eivind Johansen was also a co-founder of Giga in 1987 and later served as CTO at Intel's Optical Component Division.

The core business of IPtronics was to develop and supply chipsets that enable high-bandwidth, low-power data transmission over short distances. Its primary products included multi-channel Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) drivers and Transimpedance Amplifiers (TIAs). These components are crucial for converting electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa within optical modules. The company's offerings catered to the computer, storage, and communications industries, specifically targeting applications in data centers, high-performance computing, and supercomputers. By offering chipsets capable of operating at speeds of 10 Gbit/s per channel and higher, IPtronics addressed the market's need to overcome the physical limitations of traditional copper-based connections. In 2009, the company announced its development of technology for what would become the Thunderbolt interface.

A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Mellanox Technologies in June 2013 for approximately $47.5 million in cash. At the time of the acquisition, IPtronics' high-speed transmitter and receiver devices were already integrated into Mellanox's products. The acquisition was a strategic move for Mellanox to enhance its portfolio of end-to-end interconnect solutions, aiming to deliver faster and more efficient networks for data centers and other high-demand environments. Following the transaction, IPtronics became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mellanox and its Danish headquarters was established as Mellanox's first European R&D center.
