Iospan Wireless
An Internet infrastruture company that provides customers with mass broadband services
About Iospan Wireless
Iospan Wireless was a pioneering firm in the fixed wireless broadband sector, founded in 1998 by Arogyaswami Paulraj, a Professor Emeritus from Stanford University renowned for his work in MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) wireless technology. Paulraj, whose background includes developing military sonar systems in India and extensive research in space-time wireless communications at Stanford, established Iospan with members of his research group to commercialize the groundbreaking MIMO technology he invented. The company was based in San Jose, California.
The core of Iospan's business was the development and delivery of chipsets and a complete cellular network system for fixed broadband wireless access. This system was based on its proprietary MIMO-OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access) technology, branded as AirBurst. This technology was designed to enable the mass deployment of wireless broadband services that offered performance comparable to wireline connections, even in non-line-of-sight (Non-LOS) conditions. Iospan's comprehensive solution included base stations, subscriber stations, and the necessary back-end servers and gateways to provide an end-to-end wireless network.
The company successfully raised significant capital to fund its development, securing a total of $69 million over two funding rounds, including a $47 million Series C round in January 2001, with investors like Meritech, J.P. Morgan, and Deutsche Bank. Despite its technological advancements, Iospan Wireless ceased operations in early 2003. Its assets, primarily its intellectual property and engineering talent related to MIMO technology, were acquired by Intel Corporation, with some assets also going to PrimeWave Communications. This acquisition was part of Intel's broader strategy to bolster its capabilities in wireless communications, which would become foundational for future standards like WiMAX, 4G LTE, and Wi-Fi.
