Intelligent Ultrasound
AI-powered ultrasound simulation and image analysis software
About Intelligent Ultrasound
Intelligent Ultrasound Group, formerly known as MedaPhor, develops artificial intelligence-based software and simulation tools for medical professionals. The company was founded in 2004 as a spin-out from Cardiff University by Professor Nazar Amso. The initial focus was on creating advanced ultrasound skills training simulators. A key milestone was the 2017 acquisition of Intelligent Ultrasound Limited, an AI image recognition software spin-out from Oxford University, which expanded the company's capabilities from simulation into clinical AI software.
The company operates through two main segments: Simulation and Clinical AI. The Simulation division provides real-time, high-fidelity training simulators like ScanTrainer, HeartWorks, and BodyWorks. These products are designed to help medical professionals learn and practice ultrasound skills in various specialties, including obstetrics, gynecology, and emergency medicine. The Clinical AI division develops deep learning-based software to enhance the quality and efficiency of live ultrasound scans. Its core technology, ScanNav, provides real-time image analysis and anatomy highlighting to assist sonographers. This technology has been integrated into GE HealthCare's Voluson ultrasound machines through a strategic partnership.
The business model centers on selling simulation systems to medical institutions worldwide and licensing its clinical AI software to major healthcare equipment manufacturers. In July 2024, GE HealthCare announced an agreement to acquire Intelligent Ultrasound's clinical AI business for approximately $51 million to integrate the technology across its portfolio. In February 2025, the remaining simulation part of the company was acquired by Surgical Science Sweden AB, a leading medical simulation company.
