Insitu Inc. is an American company focused on the design, development, and manufacturing of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS). Founded in 1994 by engineers Tad McGeer and Andy von Flotow, the company originated from an interest in creating miniature robotic aircraft for long-range weather reconnaissance. The company's name is derived from the scientific term 'in situ,' which means to measure the atmosphere in its original place. A significant milestone was achieved on August 21, 1998, when their drone, Laima, became the first unmanned aircraft to cross the North Atlantic. Initially targeting commercial applications like weather and fishing fleet data collection, the company shifted its focus to military applications with the onset of the Iraq War in 2003. This led to the development of the ScanEagle UAS in partnership with Boeing. The success of this collaboration resulted in Boeing acquiring Insitu as a wholly-owned subsidiary in 2008. This unique feature allows for deployment from small ships, trucks, or other areas without a runway. The ScanEagle offers up to 18 hours of endurance, while the Integrator can fly for over 24 hours. The company also offers software and ground support, including the Common Ground Control Station (ICOMC2) which can control multiple aircraft.
