Quest Aircraft Company was established in 2001 in Sandpoint, Idaho, by founders Tom Hamilton and David Voetmann. The company's creation was driven by a specific need identified within the humanitarian aid sector for a modern, robust, short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft. Hamilton brought extensive experience in aircraft design and manufacturing, having founded Stoddard-Hamilton Aircraft in 1979 and created the Glasair line of composite kit planes. Voetmann contributed decades of experience as a pilot for humanitarian organizations, providing crucial insight into rough-field operations. This combination of expertise shaped the company's sole product, the Kodiak.

The business was founded to design and produce a next-generation utility aircraft capable of operating in rugged, remote environments where traditional aircraft could not. The company's business model initially centered on serving humanitarian and mission organizations, even implementing a program to sell one of every eleven aircraft produced at cost to these groups. Over time, the Kodiak's versatility attracted a wider client base, including air-taxi services, recreational operators, businesses, skydiving clubs, and government agencies for surveillance and wildlife management. Quest Aircraft's revenue was generated through the direct sale of its Kodiak aircraft.

The company's signature product, the Kodiak, is a 10-seat, single-engine turboprop aircraft known for its STOL capabilities, allowing it to take off in under 1,000 feet fully loaded. The unpressurized aircraft is built with a rugged aluminum fuselage, which allows for easier field repairs, and is powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprop engine. A key feature is its large clamshell door, facilitating the loading of cargo or the boarding of up to eight passengers. The interior is highly configurable, with track-mounted seats that can be easily removed to switch between passenger and cargo layouts. Initially certified by the FAA in 2007, later versions incorporated enhancements like amphibious floats and advanced avionics suites.

Quest Aircraft Company underwent several ownership changes. In 2015, it was sold to Japanese investment firm Setouchi Holdings. Subsequently, in 2019, the French industrial conglomerate and TBM aircraft manufacturer Daher acquired the company, integrating the Kodiak into its product portfolio to complement its faster TBM series. Following the acquisition, Quest was renamed Kodiak Aircraft, solidifying Daher's presence in North America and expanding its offerings in the single-engine turboprop market.
