Ike

Ike, a company focused on automated trucking technology, was established in 2018 by a team of veterans from prominent technology and automotive programs at Google, Apple, and Uber. The founders, Alden Woodrow, Nancy Sun, and Jur van den Berg, leveraged their collective experience from projects like Uber's Advanced Technologies Group to form the startup. Ike's core business was the development of Level 4 autonomous driving systems specifically for long-haul commercial trucks. The company’s strategy centered on automating the highway portion of freight transportation, with human drivers managing the more complex surface street driving at the beginning and end of each journey. This deal gave Ike access to Nuro's established software stack, providing a robust foundation for its own development focused on trucking applications. This close relationship and technological overlap culminated in December 2020, when Nuro acquired Ike. The acquisition was described as a homecoming, as Ike had initially started operations within Nuro's office space. Following the deal, approximately 55 Ike employees, including the three founders, transitioned to Nuro, integrating their expertise and technology, such as advanced virtual simulation tools, into Nuro's broader mission for automated vehicles.
