Online grocery store offering high quality name brand food and non-food items delivered directly to customers’ homes MoreLess
HomeGrocer.com was an early pioneer in the online grocery delivery market, established in 1997 by Terry Drayton, Mike Donald, James Fierro, and Ken Deering. Initially launched as GrocerNet Homeshopping, the company quickly rebranded to HomeGrocer.com in August 1998, adopting its distinctive peach logo. The business provided a comprehensive alternative to traditional supermarkets, delivering a full range of groceries, including high-quality fresh produce, meat, and seafood, directly to consumers' homes at comparable prices.
The company's business model revolved around a centralized distribution system, operating from large warehouse facilities. Deliveries were executed using a fleet of custom-built, tri-temperature trucks to ensure product freshness. HomeGrocer developed its own proprietary technology, including its website and wireless picking systems that utilized WiFi, which were advanced for their time. The company raised significant capital, totaling approximately $440 million, from prominent investors including Amazon.com, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Martha Stewart. This funding fueled an aggressive expansion, with facilities opening in multiple major U.S. markets such as Portland, Southern California, Dallas, and others.
A significant milestone was its Initial Public Offering in March 2000, which raised around $288 million. By June 2000, daily sales surpassed $1 million. However, the high costs of rapid expansion and the challenging dot-com economic climate led to the need for more capital. In September 2000, HomeGrocer.com was acquired by its cash-rich competitor, Webvan, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $1.2 billion. Following the merger, the HomeGrocer brand and technology were phased out in favor of Webvan's. The combined entity struggled, and Webvan ultimately filed for bankruptcy less than a year later. The HomeGrocer brand was later purchased out of bankruptcy and is now owned by Amazon.com.
