Hispansion
High-fidelity lunar regolith simulants for research.
About Hispansion
Hispansion Works S.L. is a Spanish deep-tech startup specializing in the development and production of high-fidelity lunar regolith simulants. The company was founded in 2024 by Carlos Aguilar Borasteros (CEO), who holds an MSc in Aerospace Engineering, and Jaime Abella Larraz (COO), who has an MSc in Biomedical Engineering. The two met in 2018 at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and their shared passion for space exploration led to the creation of Hispansion. The firm is based in Leganés, Madrid, and is part of the ESA Business Incubation Centre (ESA-BIC) Madrid Region program. Hispansion addresses a critical need in the space exploration sector by providing materials that accurately replicate the chemical, mineralogical, and mechanical properties of the Moon's surface. Its client base includes research institutions, universities, space agencies, and aerospace companies that need to test and validate technologies—such as rovers, habitats, and resource extraction equipment—in realistic lunar conditions before deployment. The company's core product is the TerraLun™ line of lunar regolith simulants, which are engineered using data from the Apollo missions and validated with NASA's Figure of Merit methodology. For example, their TLH-0 simulant, representing the lunar highlands, achieved a 91.7 out of 100 fidelity score from NASA. Hispansion produces these simulants synthetically by mixing minerals and raw materials sourced from Europe, allowing for scalability. The company has an agreement with an industrial mineral processing plant to produce over 1,000 tons of regolith annually, a key differentiator from competitors who may lack industrialized and standardized processes. In addition to simulants, Hispansion is developing testing and consulting services to help clients validate hardware and experiments in simulated lunar environments. Hispansion was officially registered in 2024, the same year it signed a collaboration agreement with the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM-ETSIME) to develop its first prototype. By 2025, the company had closed a €75,000 pre-seed funding round, been accepted into the ESA-BIC program, and launched its TerraLun™ - Core simulants line.
