HEXANA

HEXANA is an energy-focused deep-tech firm, spun-off from the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA), that is developing a modular energy platform. Founded in 2023 by Sylvain Nizou (CEO) and Paul Gauthe, the company is headquartered in Aix-en-Provence, France. HEXANA is addressing the decarbonization needs of heavy industries by developing 4th generation Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

The company's core product is an integrated system that combines sodium-cooled fast neutron reactors (SFRs) with a thermal energy storage unit. This design builds upon decades of French expertise and projects like Phénix, Superphénix, and ASTRID. The platform features a modular design, typically with two 400 MWth reactors, which can be scaled up to six modules. A key feature is the thermal storage system, which allows the reactors to operate at a constant power level while providing a flexible output of high-temperature heat (up to 500°C) and electricity. This flexibility enables it to support industrial processes, produce hydrogen and synthetic fuels, or supply electricity to the grid to capture peak prices.

HEXANA's business model centers on providing a turnkey energy solution for industrial clients in hard-to-abate sectors. The company aims to commercialize its platform by 2035. A significant aspect of its strategy is the upcycling of spent nuclear fuel, which reduces reliance on imported uranium and contributes to closing the nuclear fuel cycle. To accelerate development, HEXANA has formed strategic partnerships with industrial players like Groupe M and consulting firms such as Capgemini to refine its business model and industrialization strategy. The company has secured significant financing, including a €27 million package comprised of equity investment and a grant from Bpifrance under the France 2030 initiative. This funding is directed towards finalizing the reactor's conceptual design and submitting the Safety Options File to the French Nuclear Safety Authority.
