Guarani
Cultivates, produces and sells sugar, ethanol, and other sugarcane by-products
About Guarani
The story of Açúcar Guarani begins not with a single founder, but with the establishment of the Usina Guarani sugar mill in Olímpia, São Paulo, in the 1960s, which officially opened in 1976. This was part of a broader movement in Brazil, a country with a deep history in sugar production dating back to the 16th century, to modernize and expand its sugarcane industry in the 20th century. Initially, Guarani focused on producing sugar from the vast sugarcane fields of the region. A significant turning point came in 2001, when the French group Béghin-Say acquired control of Guarani from a group called Trilux Participações. Just a year later, control shifted to another French agricultural giant, Tereos, marking the beginning of a major international chapter for the Brazilian company. Under Tereos, Guarani began to expand significantly, acquiring more mills and increasing its production capacity for both sugar and ethanol. This expansion included a public step in 2007, when Guarani was listed on the São Paulo Stock Exchange, Bovespa. In 2010, another major player entered the scene: Petrobras, Brazil's state-owned energy company, acquired a significant stake, partnering with Tereos to fuel further growth, particularly in ethanol. However, this partnership concluded in late 2016 when Petrobras, refocusing on its core oil and gas business, sold its entire stake to Tereos for $202 million. This made Tereos the sole owner of Guarani, which was then renamed Tereos Açúcar & Energia Brasil. Today, the Guarani brand continues as a leading name in the retail sugar market, backed by one of the world's largest sugar producers.
