This technology addresses key drawbacks of graphite anodes by offering over 30% greater energy density, enabling a 15-minute charge from 10% to 75%, and improving safety. GDI's design uses a continuous, flexible silicon layer which mitigates the swelling and mechanical stress that have traditionally limited the commercial use of silicon in anodes. The company has demonstrated its technology's safety through independent tests, including passing nail penetration tests without thermal runaway. This provides a significant advantage as the market moves towards stricter safety regulations.

GDI's business model is to sell rolls of its silicon anodes directly to battery manufacturers and end-users. This allows clients to enhance their products without needing to invent new manufacturing equipment. The company is targeting a wide range of industries, including electric vehicles (EVs), defense, medical technology, aerospace, and consumer electronics. GDI is positioning itself as a key alternative to the Chinese-dominated graphite supply chain, offering a more geopolitically resilient and domestically sourced material.

The company has secured significant funding and strategic partnerships to scale its production. After initial funding from US government bodies, GDI raised over $20 million in its Series A funding round, co-led by EIT InnoEnergy and Helios Climate Ventures. It also received a €20 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). GDI has established a pilot production facility in Eindhoven, Netherlands, and is building its first manufacturing plant in Lauenförde, Germany, in partnership with AGC Glass Europe and Schlenk SE. The company plans to reach 100 MWh production capacity by 2026 and achieve gigawatt-scale manufacturing by 2030, with initial commercial applications in drones and medical devices expected within 24-30 months, followed by EVs by 2030.
