Genpact
AI-powered business process transformation and intelligent operations
About Genpact
What if a company's own back-office division spun off and became a global, multi-billion dollar giant in its own right? That's the story of Genpact. Today, Genpact is a professional services firm that helps companies transform their operations using data, analytics, and artificial intelligence. It's a long way from its humble beginnings. The company was born inside General Electric in 1997. Led by Pramod Bhasin, a 25-year GE veteran, it was initially called GE Capital International Services (GECIS). Its mission was to handle GE's own business processes, like finance and accounting, from a small 20-person office in Gurgaon, India. This internal experiment was a pioneer in what would become the massive business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. The first major pivot came in 2005. GE sold a majority stake, and the unit became an independent company. Rebranded as Genpact, for "generating business impact," it could now offer its process expertise to the entire world. This set off a period of rapid growth. Two years later, in August 2007, Genpact went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol 'G'. By 2011, Pramod Bhasin handed the CEO reins to N.V. "Tiger" Tyagarajan, who would lead the company for over a decade, shifting its headquarters to New York and doubling down on digital transformation. Today, under CEO Balkrishan "BK" Kalra, who took over in early 2024, Genpact is aggressively pushing into an "AI-first" future. Through strategic acquisitions like XponentL Data and the launch of its AI platform, Cora, the company has evolved far beyond its outsourcing roots. Genpact is now focused on building intelligent, autonomous operations for its clients, proving that sometimes the most impactful innovations start as a simple internal solution.
