About General Dynamics
General Dynamics is a heavyweight in the global aerospace and defense industry, a company that builds everything from nuclear-powered submarines and Abrams tanks to Gulfstream private jets. It's a story of radical pivots, from pioneering undersea warfare to dominating the skies of business travel. The company's origins trace back to 1899 with the founding of the Electric Boat Company by Isaac Rice. He acquired the rights to Irish-American inventor John Philip Holland's revolutionary submarine designs, which formed the basis for the U.S. Navy's first submarine fleet. The modern corporation, however, was the vision of John Jay Hopkins. As president of Electric Boat, he saw a future beyond just submarines. In 1952, he established General Dynamics as a parent company, soon acquiring aircraft manufacturer Convair. This move was quickly validated when, in 1954, the company launched the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, cementing its role as a critical defense partner. Over the decades, General Dynamics expanded, notably creating its Land Systems division after purchasing Chrysler's tank division in 1982. However, the end of the Cold War triggered a dramatic shift. In the early 1990s, under CEO William A. Anders, the company sold off most of its portfolio, including the iconic F-16 fighter jet business, to focus almost exclusively on submarines and armored vehicles. That intense focus didn't last. Starting in the mid-1990s, General Dynamics began a strategic expansion. The most transformative move was the 1999 acquisition of Gulfstream Aerospace, a premier business jet manufacturer. This created a powerful commercial business to complement its defense contracts. Today, General Dynamics operates through four main segments: Aerospace, Marine Systems, Combat Systems, and Technologies. This dual-engine strategy—serving both government and commercial markets—defines the company, providing a stable foundation built on massive defense backlogs and high-end aviation.
