About Freight Farms

Freight Farms, a Boston-based agricultural technology company, was a key player in the development of containerized farming. The company was founded in 2010 by Jon Friedman and Brad McNamara, who were inspired by urban agriculture. After initially exploring rooftop greenhouses, they shifted to retrofitting insulated 40-foot shipping containers into modular, scalable hydroponic farms, leading to the incorporation of Freight Farms in 2013. This move addressed the need for a system that could operate year-round in any climate.

The company's business model centered on selling these container farms, branded as the 'Greenery S', directly to a diverse client base that included small business entrepreneurs, educational institutions, corporations, hotels, restaurants, and non-profits. Revenue was generated from the sale of these units, which cost between $165,000 and $169,000, and through recurring subscriptions to their proprietary software, farmhand®. The farmhand® platform was integral to the offering, providing automation for lighting, climate, and watering schedules, alongside remote monitoring and data analysis to optimize crop yields and operational efficiency. This software connected operators into a global network, fostering a community for sharing knowledge and best practices.

The Greenery S container farm is a self-contained agricultural ecosystem, equivalent to 2-4 acres of traditional farmland, capable of producing 2-6 tons of produce annually with significantly less water. It utilizes a combination of ebb-and-flow hydroponics for seedlings and a vertical drip irrigation system for mature plants, which include over 500 varieties of lettuces, herbs, and leafy greens. The system features high-efficiency LED lighting to simulate ideal growing conditions and a workstation for farm operations. Despite raising over $45 million in funding, the company faced financial difficulties, scrapping a planned IPO in late 2023 and ultimately filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in May 2025. In July 2025, Ottawa-based competitor Growcer acquired Freight Farms' assets, including its intellectual property and customer base, aiming to continue supporting the existing network of over 600 farms.
