Formspring was a social question-and-answer platform that experienced a meteoric rise and subsequent decline in the early 2010s. The company was established in November 2009 by co-founders Ade Olonoh and John Wechsler, originating as an offshoot of a different venture. Olonoh, a computer science engineer, had previously founded Formstack, an online form builder for businesses. He observed a significant number of users leveraging Formstack to create "ask me anything" style forms for their blogs. Recognizing this emergent user behavior, Olonoh developed and launched Formspring.me as a side project to directly serve this need.

The platform's core offering was straightforward: it allowed users to create profiles where anyone, including anonymous visitors, could ask them questions. This simple premise fueled rapid, viral growth, as users were eager to invite friends to their profiles to solicit questions. Formspring achieved remarkable early traction, reaching one million registered users within its first 45 days and growing to over 25 million users by mid-2011. The platform was spun off into its own company, relocating from Indianapolis to San Francisco and attracting a total of $14.3 million in funding from investors including Redpoint Ventures, Baseline Ventures, and SV Angel. The business model was not clearly defined at launch, with plans to introduce an advertising-based revenue stream later on.

The service enabled users to get to know each other on a deeper level beyond typical social media status updates by facilitating direct, conversational Q&A. Its main feature was the profile page with an inbox for incoming questions, which users could then answer publicly. The key differentiator was the option for questions to be asked anonymously, which fostered a sense of raw, unfiltered communication. However, this same feature became the company's greatest challenge. The anonymity led to widespread cyberbullying, with a number of tragic teen suicides linked to cruelty on the platform. Faced with mounting controversy and competition from larger platforms like Tumblr that replicated its core Q&A feature, Formspring struggled to maintain momentum. Despite efforts to combat bullying and redesign the site, user engagement declined. The company found it challenging to sustain the resources needed to operate and announced its shutdown in March 2013, with its assets later being acquired by Spring.me.
