Flywheel Sports
High-intensity, motivating cardio workout to help riders achieve proven results
About Flywheel Sports
Flywheel Sports was an indoor cycling and fitness company founded in 2010 by Ruth Zukerman, Jay Galuzzo, and David Seldin. Zukerman, a pivotal figure in the boutique fitness scene, had previously co-founded SoulCycle. Her background as a dancer and group fitness instructor informed her vision for a more data-driven and competitive cycling experience. Leaving SoulCycle, she partnered with Galuzzo and Seldin to create a studio that emphasized performance metrics.

The company's business model revolved around pay-per-class and monthly membership options for its studio offerings. Flywheel primarily served fitness enthusiasts in major urban markets, offering high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on stationary bikes. Revenue was generated through class packages, memberships, and the sale of branded merchandise. The core service, Flywheel, was a 45 or 60-minute class featuring climbs and descents set to curated music playlists. A key differentiator was the "TorqBoard," an in-studio screen that displayed real-time rider performance data, allowing for optional competition among participants. The company also offered "FlyBarre," a full-body workout combining light weight training, dance, and core exercises.
Flywheel expanded significantly, operating over 40 studios across the U.S. at its peak. In 2017, the company entered the at-home market with its FLY Anywhere bike and a subscription service for streaming classes, directly competing with Peloton. However, this move led to a patent infringement lawsuit from Peloton, which Flywheel settled in February 2020, agreeing to cease its at-home virtual classes. Facing financial difficulties and the collapse of a planned acquisition by Town Sports International, the parent company of New York Sports Clubs, Flywheel's challenges were intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2020, Flywheel Sports Inc. filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, leading to the liquidation of its assets and the permanent closure of all its studios.
