About Flux XII

Flux XII, Inc. is a Madison, Wisconsin-based company founded in 2021 by Dr. Patrick Sullivan (CEO), Dr. Xiuliang Lyu (CSO), and Professor Dawei Feng (Scientific Advisor). The company is developing advanced materials for aqueous redox flow batteries (RFBs) to enable long-duration energy storage for the electrical grid. The technology originated from research conducted by Dawei Feng at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's College of Engineering.

The company's core technology revolves around synthetically engineered organic molecules derived from abundant carbon feedstocks. These organic battery-active salts are dissolved in benign, pH-neutral water, creating an electrolyte that is safer and more sustainable than conventional battery chemistries. This approach avoids reliance on mined rare minerals and complex supply chains. Flux XII develops both the anolyte and catholyte—the liquid electrolytes that circulate through the battery's power cell—as well as novel ion-exchange membranes that prevent chemical mixing while allowing charge to pass through. The firm's mission is to make intermittent renewable power, like solar and wind, a reliable source of baseload grid capacity.

Flux XII operates in the grid energy storage market, targeting clients such as utilities, grid power developers, and operators of large-scale infrastructure like data centers and EV charging networks. The business model is focused on producing and supplying the core components—electrolytes and membranes—and eventually fully integrated, containerized Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The company aims to significantly lower the capital expenditure (CapEx) of flow battery systems, targeting a 50% reduction at the 100-megawatt scale.

In November 2025, Flux XII announced a $3.95 million seed funding round led by The Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, with participation from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), Desai Ventures, and gener8tor. This capital is being used to scale up the production of its electrolytes and membranes, test kilowatt-scale prototypes, and validate its minimal viable product module, which is planned for 2026. The company is also forming a consortium of partners, including utilities and developers, to begin pilot system deployments in 2027.
