Filld initiated its journey in 2015 as a mobile refueling service designed to deliver gasoline directly to a customer's vehicle, effectively eliminating the need for traditional gas station visits. Founded in Palo Alto, California, by Christopher Aubuchon, the company's CTO, Filld initially focused on a direct-to-consumer model. Users could request a fill-up through a mobile application, pinning their car's location and selecting a delivery window. The business model involved charging the local average price for gasoline plus a delivery fee.

The company's early operations involved purchasing fuel from wholesalers and using a fleet of custom, DOT-certified trucks to service customers primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the years, Filld successfully raised capital to fuel its growth, securing $3.25 million in a seed round in 2015, a $9.65 million Series A in 2017, and a $15 million Series B in 2018, bringing its total funding to over $36 million. These investments supported expansion into new markets like Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver, Canada, and fostered key partnerships with automotive companies such as Bentley, Volvo, and Daimler's car2go.

Observing the operational needs of the mobile fueling sector, Filld has strategically pivoted its business model. While it once managed its own fleet for direct fuel delivery, the company now concentrates on being an end-to-end technology provider for other mobile fueling companies. Filld offers a comprehensive Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform that includes both software and hardware solutions. This platform is engineered to manage the complex logistics of last-mile fuel delivery, serving a diverse client base that includes businesses catering to individual consumers, commercial fleets, and large enterprise accounts. This shift leverages the company's extensive experience in mobile fueling operations to empower other businesses in the same market.
