Expertlead operates a digital platform to connect companies with a global community of highly vetted freelance technology experts. Founded in January 2018 by Alexander Schlomberg and Arne Hosemann, the Berlin-based firm was established to address the significant challenge companies face in sourcing, assessing, and hiring qualified tech talent. The founders' backgrounds in consulting at McKinsey and Bain, respectively, exposed them to this widespread pain point in the market, particularly among traditional corporations undergoing digital transformation.

The company's business model centers on providing clients, which range from large enterprises like Lufthansa and Deutsche Bank to various tech companies, with rapid access to tech professionals. Companies can submit their project requirements on the platform and typically receive profiles of suitable, pre-screened candidates within 48 hours. Expertlead’s core service involves a rigorous vetting process that distinguishes it from standard freelance marketplaces. This process includes proprietary coding tests and peer-to-peer technical interviews conducted by existing members of its expert community. This ensures a high standard of quality, with only a small percentage of applicants being accepted into the network. The firm generates revenue by facilitating these project-based engagements for freelancers specializing in areas like development, data science, product management, and UX/UI design.

In addition to its freelance marketplace, Expertlead expanded its services to include 'expertview', which allows clients to use its assessment process for their permanent hiring needs, and was developing a SaaS model for talent identification and evaluation. The company secured multiple funding rounds, including a €7 million Series A in 2019 and a €9.5 million round in 2021, with investors such as Acton Capital, Rocket Internet, and SEEK. In August 2023, Expertlead was acquired by WorkGenius, a New York-headquartered freelance technology company, with the goal of integrating Expertlead's assessment technology and freelance community into WorkGenius's global platform.
