About Equitas Holdings

Equitas Holdings Limited (EHL) operates as the holding company for Equitas Small Finance Bank, a key player in India's financial services sector. The journey began in 2007 when P. N. Vasudevan founded the company, originally named UPDB Micro Finance Private Limited, in Chennai. Vasudevan, who previously held a leadership role at Cholamandalam Finance, was driven by a mission to provide financial services to underserved segments of society, including those overlooked by traditional banking systems. This mission started with providing small loans at fair interest rates, a departure from the predatory lending practices prevalent at the time.

The firm initially focused on microfinance and later diversified its portfolio. In 2011, it expanded into commercial vehicle and housing finance, followed by SME and loan-against-property (LAP) financing in 2013. A significant milestone was achieved in 2015 when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted it an in-principle approval to establish a Small Finance Bank (SFB). This led to the commencement of banking operations on September 5, 2016, under the name Equitas Small Finance Bank Ltd. The bank became a scheduled bank in February 2017 and went public with an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in October 2020. In a strategic move to streamline its structure, Equitas Holdings Limited reverse merged with Equitas Small Finance Bank in March 2023.

Equitas Small Finance Bank's business model is centered on financial inclusion, targeting individuals and Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) that have limited access to formal credit channels. Its revenue is primarily generated from interest income on its loan portfolio, which includes microfinance, vehicle finance, housing finance, and corporate loans. The bank also earns fee-based income from services like the distribution of insurance and mutual fund products. The client base is diverse, ranging from low-income individuals and self-employed entrepreneurs to small businesses. The bank operates a network of over 860 branches across 17 states, serving more than four million customers. The bank's strategy involves a mix of physical branches and digital platforms to deliver its services, including a partnership with neobanking firm Niyo to launch the NiyoX mobile banking platform.

The bank offers a comprehensive suite of products and services. On the lending side, it provides microfinance loans, commercial vehicle loans, affordable housing finance, and loans to small and medium enterprises. On the liability side, it offers a range of savings and current accounts, as well as term deposits. A notable feature is its commitment to social initiatives through the Equitas Development Initiatives Trust (EDIT), established in 2008, which focuses on education, health, and skill development for underserved communities.
