Entropic Communications
World leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home
About Entropic Communications
Entropic Communications, Inc. operated as a fabless semiconductor company, establishing a significant market position in solutions for the connected home before its acquisition. Founded in 2001 by Dr. Anton Monk, Itzhak Gurantz, and Ladd El Wardani, the San Diego-based firm was instrumental in developing foundational technologies for home networking and television signal distribution. A major milestone for the company was its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on December 7, 2007, listing on the NASDAQ under the ticker ENTR.
The company’s business model revolved around designing and selling System-on-a-Chip (SoC) solutions and other semiconductor products to service providers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Its client base included major cable, satellite, and fiber service providers such as Comcast, DIRECTV, and Verizon. Entropic was a key player in pioneering the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) standard, a technology that enables the distribution of high-speed data and video over existing in-home coaxial cabling. This technology offered a cost-effective way for service providers to deliver services like multi-room DVR and reliable, high-bandwidth home networking without new wiring. Beyond MoCA, Entropic developed Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) Outdoor Unit (ODU) technology, which simplified the installation needed to receive channels from multiple satellites over a single cable.
Entropic's product portfolio was diverse, covering home networking, set-top boxes (STBs), and broadband access. Its MoCA chipsets were widely deployed by U.S. and European service providers. The company's STB SoC solutions provided the core components for digital set-top boxes across satellite, cable, terrestrial, and IPTV markets. For broadband access, particularly in China, its Ethernet-over-Coax (EoC) products delivered connectivity for the "last few hundred meters" to homes and apartment buildings. On February 3, 2015, MaxLinear, Inc. announced a definitive agreement to acquire Entropic for an implied total transaction value of approximately $287 million. The acquisition was completed in April 2015, integrating Entropic's team, customer relationships, and extensive patent portfolio of approximately 1,500 patents into MaxLinear's operations. In 2021, a new entity, Entropic Communications LLC, acquired the pioneering patents from the original company and continues to license this foundational technology for the satellite and cable industries.
