Entone
Cable TV products manufactured for network operators
About Entone
Entone, founded in 1999, established itself as a provider of hybrid television and connected home services technology. The company was co-founded by Mark Evensen, who served as the Chief Technology Officer and was a key architect in the development of interactive television services. His prior experience includes leading the deployment of one of the first large-scale commercial video-on-demand services at Cable & Wireless Hongkong Telecom.
The company's business focused on developing and marketing solutions for service operators to deliver integrated IP-based video and broadband services. Entone's primary clients were service providers, particularly in the independent tier 2/3 market, for whom they supplied IP-only and hybrid set-top boxes and gateways. The company generated revenue through the sale of its hardware, which included products like the Janus Media Hub, Amulet, Kamai, and Hydra, as well as software and accessories such as WiFi adapters. These products enabled the integration of broadcast television, whole-home digital video recorders (DVR), web media services, and personal media sharing. A notable feature of Entone's technology was its ability to utilize existing in-home wiring, which simplified installation and reduced costs for operators.
A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by UK-based Amino Technologies in 2015 for approximately $73 million. At the time of the acquisition, Entone had over 150 customers globally and was generating annual revenues in the tens of millions. The acquisition was a strategic move by Amino to expand its global footprint, enhance its capabilities in the IPTV and hybrid broadcast market, and eliminate a direct competitor. Following the acquisition, Entone's operations were integrated into Amino, which later became part of Aferian.
