EncoSmart, founded in Beijing in 2022 by Chen Zhen, develops multi-modal robotic and automation solutions for the food service industry. Zhen, who also founded Speedgaze (速感科技), has an extensive background in human-computer interaction and robotics.

The company's primary product is the LAVA series, an embodied AI robot chef designed to autonomously cook. It utilizes multi-modal sensory inputs, including computer vision, to identify ingredients, manage cooking processes, and control food flavors and textures. The system is engineered for self-learning, allowing it to expand its culinary capabilities over time. EncoSmart's technology aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and standardize food preparation in commercial kitchens. Initially, the robots will handle the preparation of fast foods like fried chicken and french fries.

In September 2024, EncoSmart received the first food operating license for an AI robot company in Beijing from the Haidian District Market Supervision Bureau. This allows the deployment of its robots in catering kitchens within the district. The company operates on a venture capital-backed business model and has secured multiple rounds of funding. Its investors include TusStar, Grower Venture Capital, and Century Galaxy. EncoSmart plans to pilot its robots with major restaurant chains and is collaborating with Beijing officials to establish new standards for robotics in the catering industry.
