Ember Therapeutics
Metabolic disease therapeutics harnessing brown fat biology
About Ember Therapeutics
Ember Therapeutics was a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing treatments for metabolic diseases and later, osteoarthritis and organ fibrosis. Initially launched in December 2011 by Third Rock Ventures with $34 million in Series A financing, the company was founded by prominent scientists Bruce Spiegelman, Patrick Griffin, and C. Ronald Kahn. The company, formerly known as Adipothermics, was built on scientific breakthroughs in brown fat biology and selective insulin sensitivity to create treatments for Type 2 diabetes and obesity. The core idea was to harness brown fat's ability to burn calories to combat these metabolic conditions, with early research focusing on a newly identified hormone, irisin.
In March 2015, Ember merged with Mariel Therapeutics, a company specializing in Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 (BMP-7) for osteoarthritis and kidney fibrosis. This merger shifted Ember's focus from metabolic diseases to bone and cartilage regeneration. The combined entity continued under the Ember Therapeutics name, holding a portfolio of over 450 patents related to BMP-7 acquired from Stryker Corporation. Following the merger, the company reported encouraging interim Phase 2 results for its lead asset, BMP-7, in preventing cartilage loss in osteoarthritis patients. In February 2016, Ember completed a reverse merger with American Home Alliance Corp., becoming a publicly traded company on the OTC Markets.
Despite its promising start and strategic shifts, Ember Therapeutics ultimately ceased operations. Third Rock Ventures, the lead investor, pulled out in late 2014, prior to the Mariel merger, citing a longer-than-anticipated timeline for sorting out the complex biology of brown fat. After the merger and going public, the company struggled to maintain momentum, and by October 2023, its website and employee presence had disappeared.
