Ellipse Technologies
Focuses on developing and marketing magnetically adjustable implant systems based on its magnetic external control technology platform
About Ellipse Technologies
Founded in 2005, Ellipse Technologies, Inc. operated as a medical device company focused on developing remotely controlled, adjustable implants for orthopedic and spinal applications. The company was originally a spin-off of MiCardia, initially targeting treatments for GERD and obesity using shape memory implants. A significant pivot occurred in 2007, led by Chairman of the Board Mike Henson, who redirected the company's focus toward orthopedic applications. This new direction led to the development of its core technology by a small team that included inventors Scott Pool, Arvin Chang, Blair Walker, and Peter Tran.

Ellipse Technologies' business model centered on the commercialization of its proprietary MAGnetic External Control (MAGEC®) technology platform. This system allowed for the non-invasive adjustment of implants after surgery, a significant shift from traditional methods that often required multiple follow-up surgeries. The company primarily served pediatric and adult patients requiring treatment for complex skeletal deformities, marketing its products to orthopedic and spine surgeons globally. Revenue was generated through the sale of these high-value medical devices in the United States and 29 other countries. By 2015, the company had achieved approximately $40 million in revenue, a 54% increase from the previous year.
The company's product portfolio was highlighted by two main systems. The first was the MAGEC-EOS spinal bracing and distraction system, designed for children with early-onset scoliosis (EOS). This system utilizes an implantable magnetic rod that can be lengthened externally by a physician using a remote controller, thereby accommodating a child's growth and correcting the spinal curve without repeated invasive procedures. The second flagship product was the PRECICE® Limb Lengthening System, an intramedullary nail used to correct limb length discrepancies in the femur and tibia. This device also used the external remote controller for precise, non-invasive adjustments, offering a less painful alternative to traditional external fixation devices. The FDA provided clearance for various iterations of the PRECICE system and the MAGEC system's controller between 2011 and 2015. A major milestone was the acquisition of Ellipse Technologies by NuVasive, Inc. in January 2016 for an upfront payment of $380 million, with a potential additional $30 million based on revenue targets. At the time of the acquisition, Ellipse's President and CEO was Edmund J. Roschak, who subsequently joined the NuVasive executive team.
