About Dualthegame
Dual Universe was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by the Paris-based studio Novaquark. The company was founded in January 2014 by Jean-Christophe Baillie, who also served as the CEO and designer. Baillie, a French scientist and entrepreneur with a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, drew upon his extensive background to conceptualize the game. His career includes founding the Cognitive Robotics Lab at ENSTA ParisTech and creating Gostai, a robotics startup acquired by Aldebaran Robotics (a subsidiary of SoftBank Group) in 2012. The idea for Dual Universe originated in 2011, stemming from Baillie's interest in creating a large-scale virtual world with emergent social systems.

The game was built on a unique proposition: a single-shard, continuous universe where all players coexist without loading screens or instancing, a feat made possible by Novaquark's proprietary CSSC (Continuous Single-Shard Cluster) server technology. It targeted players interested in sandbox experiences, combining elements from games like Eve Online, Minecraft, and Space Engineers. The core of the gameplay was its fully editable, voxel-based world. Players could build virtually anything, from personal homes and ground vehicles to massive spaceships and orbital stations. This creative freedom was central to the game's player-driven economy; with no non-player characters (NPCs), all items, ships, and structures had to be crafted and traded by the players themselves. This design fostered a complex interplay of roles, including miners, builders, traders, pirates, and political leaders who could form organizations to control territory and resources.
The business model for Dual Universe was subscription-based, a decision made to cover the significant costs of maintaining the single-shard server infrastructure. Revenue was generated through monthly subscription fees, with an option to purchase a token (DAC) with real money that could be traded for in-game currency. Novaquark successfully raised significant capital to fund development, securing over $22 million by June 2019 through a Kickstarter campaign and subsequent investment rounds from firms like Andurance Ventures and Azom Partners. After years in development, including alpha and beta stages, the game officially launched on September 27, 2022. However, there are reports that NetEase, which has acquired several gaming studios, may be divesting from its overseas teams, which could impact studios like Novaquark's owner.
