Commercial entity behind docker, an open source app portability project
About DotCloud
DotCloud emerged in 2008, established in Paris by co-founders Solomon Hykes, Kamel Founadi, and Sebastien Pahl. Hykes, a Franco-American entrepreneur with a passion for programming from a young age, along with Pahl, were alumni of the Epitech computer science school. The venture was created to address the challenges developers faced in deploying and managing applications, positioning itself as a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provider in the nascent cloud computing market. The company's initial value proposition was to offer a multi-language platform where developers could build, run, and scale their applications without managing the underlying infrastructure, supporting languages like Java, Python, and PHP.
The firm's trajectory significantly changed after being accepted into the Y Combinator incubator program in the summer of 2010, which facilitated its move to Silicon Valley. This period was pivotal, leading to an initial funding round of $10 million in early 2011 from investors including Benchmark Capital and Trinity Ventures. DotCloud's core offering allowed developers to assemble applications from various pre-configured technology stacks and services, a key differentiator in a market that included competitors like Heroku. The platform was designed to abstract away the complexities of deployment, load balancing, and scaling, appealing to a wide range of developers from hobbyists to enterprise-level organizations.
Internally, DotCloud developed a sophisticated containerization technology to power its platform, enabling it to package applications with their dependencies into isolated, portable units. This internal tool was the genesis of what would become Docker. Recognizing the immense potential of this underlying technology, the team released it as an open-source project in March 2013. The project, named Docker, gained rapid and widespread adoption within the developer community. The explosive growth and interest in Docker prompted a strategic pivot; in October 2013, the company officially rebranded from DotCloud, Inc. to Docker, Inc. to focus entirely on the containerization technology. Following this pivot, the original DotCloud PaaS business was sold to the German PaaS vendor cloudControl in August 2014, allowing the company to dedicate all its resources to developing the Docker ecosystem. The dotCloud PaaS was ultimately shut down on February 29, 2016, after its parent company, cloudControl, filed for bankruptcy.
