Doppler Labs
Wearable technology company creating products that enhance the way you experience your world
About Doppler Labs
Doppler Labs was an audio technology company established in November 2013 by Noah Kraft, Fritz Lanman, and Dan Wiggins with the ambitious goal of placing a computer in every ear. Kraft brought experience from the entertainment industry and as a consultant for Google, while Lanman was a former Microsoft executive and a notable angel investor. Wiggins was a veteran in acoustics and technology. The company's business model was centered on designing and selling its own in-ear computing hardware directly to consumers.

The company's first product was the DUBS Acoustic Filters, a set of non-electronic, high-tech earplugs designed to reduce volume across frequencies without sacrificing audio fidelity. This initial product helped generate early cash flow and brand awareness. Doppler Labs gained significant attention with its flagship product, the Here One, a pair of wireless smart earbuds. The Here One system allowed users to stream music, take calls, and, most distinctly, use an associated smartphone app to selectively filter and modify ambient environmental sounds in real-time. Users could suppress background noise, amplify speech, or apply audio effects to live music. This functionality positioned the Here One as one of the first in-ear computers, aimed at creating an augmented audio reality.
Doppler Labs secured over $50 million in funding from investors, including The Chernin Group, Wildcat Capital Management, and prominent figures like David Geffen. Despite its vision and receiving several industry awards, the company faced substantial hurdles. The Here One earbuds were plagued by technical issues, most notably a short battery life of around two hours, and manufacturing challenges that delayed their release to February 2017. Sales of the $299 device fell short of expectations, with only 25,000 units sold out of a 100,000-unit goal. Facing intense competition from established tech giants like Apple and unable to secure a necessary Series C funding round, Doppler Labs announced it was ceasing operations on November 1, 2017, and officially closed a month later. The company's intellectual property was later acquired by Dolby Labs.
