About DocuTAP

DocuTAP, Inc. operated as a healthcare technology provider specializing in the urgent care and on-demand primary care sectors before its evolution into Experity. The company was founded in 2000 by Eric McDonald, who foresaw the need for mobile, handheld devices in healthcare settings. With a degree in computer science, McDonald started the company by writing the initial code himself in his basement, a process that took five years before the business began to gain traction.

The firm's core business centered on providing a suite of integrated software solutions, including an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, Practice Management (PM) software, and Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) services. These products were delivered through a web-based, software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, designed for ease of implementation and use on mobile tablets. Key features included streamlined clinical workflows, concurrent charting for multiple staff members, patient check-in and scheduling, real-time insurance verification, and a patient portal. The business generated revenue through subscriptions to its platform and by providing billing and collection services.

DocuTAP's trajectory included significant milestones, such as securing over $30 million in private equity between 2012 and 2015. A pivotal moment occurred in May 2016 when Warburg Pincus, a global private equity firm, acquired a majority stake in the company, providing substantial capital for expansion. This partnership aimed to increase DocuTAP's market presence and bolster its product line. By May 2019, Warburg Pincus orchestrated a merger between DocuTAP and its largest competitor, Practice Velocity. This strategic combination led to the formation of a new entity named Experity. Following the merger, DocuTAP's founder, Eric McDonald, transitioned to a role as a board member and strategic advisor for the new company, with Dr. David Stern, the former CEO of Practice Velocity, becoming the CEO of Experity.
