Deja
The first precision buying service, and the leading usenet discussion service
About Deja
Deja.com, originally launched in 1995 as Deja News, was a notable entity in the early internet era, primarily recognized for creating a searchable archive of Usenet discussion groups. Founded by Steve Madere in Austin, Texas, the company provided a simple web-based interface that made the vast content of Usenet accessible to a broader audience, allowing users to search across archived newsgroups and retain messages indefinitely.
The company's trajectory involved a significant pivot in its business model. In 1999, Deja News rebranded as Deja.com, shifting its focus from Usenet discussions to consumer-oriented product reviews and comparison shopping. This strategic move aimed to capitalize on the burgeoning e-commerce market by acting as an intermediary between consumers and online retailers, incorporating user-generated reviews and product ratings into its platform. Despite its popularity, the company faced financial challenges and struggled to establish a profitable business model. Records from the first quarter of 1999 showed a loss of $3 million on revenue of $1.7 million. An attempt at an initial public offering (IPO) was filed but ultimately withdrawn.
Facing financial distress, Deja.com underwent a structured divestiture of its assets. In December 2000, the consumer-review and shopping comparison segment of the business was sold to eBay's subsidiary, Half.com. Subsequently, in February 2001, Google acquired the remainder of the business, which included the core Usenet search technology, the extensive archive of over 500 million messages, and the Deja.com trademarks. This acquisition was a strategic move for Google, which integrated Deja's assets to create and launch Google Groups, preserving the historical Usenet archive and expanding its search capabilities. The Deja.com domain now redirects to Google Groups, marking the final chapter of its independent operation.
