About Crédit Agricole
The story of Crédit Agricole begins in the late 19th century, a time when French farmers struggled to get loans. Traditional banks were concentrated in cities and didn't understand the needs of agriculture. In response, a mutualist movement emerged. In 1885, Louis Milcent and Alfred Bouvet established the first local agricultural lending bank in Salins-les-Bains. This initiative served as a model, and with the support of Minister for Agriculture Jules Méline, the Act of 5 November 1894 paved the way for the creation of Crédit Agricole's local banks. The structure was built on a cooperative, three-tiered "pyramid" model. At the base were the local banks owned by their members. These were then grouped into regional banks. The system was solidified in 1920 with the creation of a central clearing organization, which later became the Caisse Nationale de Crédit Agricole (CNCA). This structure allowed the bank to expand its services beyond short-term harvest loans to financing rural electrification and craftsmen. A major turning point came in 1988 with the privatization of the CNCA. The regional banks and staff acquired the central institution, making Crédit Agricole fully independent from the state. This set the stage for significant diversification. The pivotal moment arrived in December 2001, when the central body, renamed Crédit Agricole S.A., was listed on the stock exchange. This IPO provided the means for major acquisitions, including that of Crédit Lyonnais, transforming the once purely agricultural lender into one of Europe's largest universal banking groups.
