COMISMA
IP platform for manga, anime, and webtoons
About COMISMA
COMISMA Inc., formerly known as COMICSMART Inc., is an IP platform company focused on the development, content creation, and platform operation for manga, anime, and webtoons. Founded on February 1, 2013, by CEO Koki Sato, the company's mission is to elevate the professional value of manga artists and establish it as an aspirational career. Sato, who previously led Septeni Holdings, spun off COMISMA to create an independent startup.
The company's core service is the manga application "GANMA!", which launched in 2013 and has surpassed 19 million downloads. This app provides readers with access to over 360 original manga titles across a wide variety of genres, such as suspense, romance, and fantasy. Most original serialized manga are available for free from the first to the latest chapter. The business model includes a premium subscription service, GANMA! Premium, which offers ad-free, early access to new chapters and unlimited reading of completed series for a monthly fee. Revenue is also generated from in-app advertisements for non-premium users.
COMISMA operates a Manga Studio to discover and nurture new artists, and has expanded into animation by establishing the digital anime studio "Qzil.la" in 2021. In February 2025, COMISMA acquired the feature-length animation studio production division from Imagica Infos to enhance its animation production capabilities. The company has also established a webtoon studio in Fukuoka and co-founded "Studio Azuki," a U.S.-based anime studio, in partnership with Azuki and Xenotoon, to produce and distribute original IP globally.
In August 2024, the company secured $19.5 million (2.8 billion JPY) in a Series A funding round from investors including World Innovation Lab (WiL), DIMENSION, and Dai-Ichi Life Insurance.
