About Columbia Asia Hospitals
Columbia Asia Hospitals established its presence in India in 2005, marking its entry as one of the first healthcare groups to do so through the 100% foreign direct investment route. The company was founded and managed by the Seattle-based Columbia Pacific Management, led by Chairman Dan Baty. The group's strategy centered on building modern, mid-sized multi-specialty hospitals in residential areas to provide accessible and affordable healthcare. Its first hospital in India was launched in Hebbal, Bengaluru. Over the years, the chain expanded its footprint across India, with facilities in Mysore, Kolkata, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Patiala, and Pune.
The business model focused on delivering high-quality patient care by integrating internationally benchmarked medical practices with advanced technology. This included a common software operating system across all hospitals for efficient record-keeping and diagnostics. Columbia Asia catered to both domestic and international patients, offering a range of services from consultations to complex surgeries like transplants, interventional cardiology, and oncology. The hospitals were designed to create a positive patient experience, emphasizing a culture of putting the patient first.
In a significant consolidation within the Indian healthcare sector, Manipal Hospitals announced its intent to acquire a 100% stake in Columbia Asia's Indian operations in November 2020. The acquisition was completed in April 2021 for a value of approximately ₹2,100 crore. This strategic move made Manipal Hospitals the second-largest multi-specialty hospital chain in the country. Prior to the acquisition, Columbia Asia operated 11 hospitals in India with over 1,300 beds, 1,200 clinicians, and 4,000 employees. Following the takeover, Columbia Asia hospitals were rebranded as Manipal Hospitals, integrating them into a larger network of 27 hospitals across 15 cities.
