About Codon Devices

Codon Devices was a biotechnology company that specialized in synthetic biology, founded in 2004 as a collaboration between academic researchers, entrepreneurs, and investors. The company's scientific founders included prominent figures like George Church from Harvard Medical School, Drew Endy and Joseph Jacobson from MIT, and Jay Keasling from the University of California, Berkeley. The founding investors included Flagship Ventures, Alloy Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Vinod Khosla. Samir Kaul was the founding CEO, later succeeded by John P. Danner in November 2005.

The company's core technology was its proprietary BioFAB™ platform, which utilized informatics, robotics, and sequencing to synthesize long stretches of genetic code more rapidly and cost-effectively than previous methods. This platform was designed to enable a new paradigm the company termed "Constructive Biology™", applying engineering principles to biology. Codon Devices aimed to serve industrial, pharmaceutical, and academic clients by providing high-value products and design services. Its offerings included constructed clones, variant libraries, and operons, with applications in developing engineered cells for producing novel pharmaceuticals, improved vaccines, agricultural products, and biorefineries for chemicals and energy.

Codon Devices secured a $13 million Series A financing round in June 2005 and commenced laboratory operations in March 2005, achieving its first revenues by November of the same year. It later closed a $20 million Series B round in December 2006, led by Highland Capital Partners, and added an additional $11 million to this round in March 2008, bringing the total to $31 million. Despite its promising start and significant funding, the company ceased operations in 2009.
