CiteeCar
Low cost car sharing platform for Germany
About CiteeCar
CiteeCar operated as a low-cost car-sharing service, launching in 2012 with a distinct business model aimed at providing an affordable alternative to urban car ownership. The company was founded by rental car veteran Bill Jones, who served as CEO, and Mauro Mariani. Jones' extensive background in leading businesses across various sectors, including technology and telecommunications, informed the company's strategic direction. The venture was initiated and incubated by Mangrove Capital Partners, the venture firm known for backing Skype, because they identified a gap in the market for an economically viable car-sharing model.
The service was structured to blend the logistical advantages of a traditional rental business with the network effects of a peer-to-peer platform. CiteeCar managed its own fleet of vehicles, primarily Kia Rios, which were leased and replaced annually to ensure quality. Revenue was generated through a multi-tiered pricing structure, consisting of a monthly membership fee, a low hourly rate, and a per-kilometer charge. A core component of its strategy was the "CiteeHosts" program, where members provided private parking spaces for the vehicles in exchange for monthly driving credits. This approach allowed for rapid expansion into new urban areas by circumventing the high costs and bureaucratic delays associated with securing city-regulated parking. The service launched initially in Berlin and subsequently expanded to other major German cities, including Hamburg, Munich, and Frankfurt.
Users accessed the service through a website or a dedicated mobile application, which facilitated booking and vehicle access via a member card. In April 2014, CiteeCar secured $10 million in a Series A funding round led by Mangrove Capital Partners, with participation from Bscope, to fuel its domestic and international expansion plans. By this time, the company had grown its fleet to over 500 cars across four German cities. The company was ultimately acquired by The Car Box on January 1, 2016.
